Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force meets to discuss new State Energy Plan
Plan is now available to the public
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, Oct. 1, 2026 – The Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force met yesterday to receive a detailed briefing on the state’s newly developed State Energy Plan. The plan, released to the public following the task force’s meeting, addresses the state’s evolving energy landscape and identifies policies to adapt to these changes. The task force will be instrumental to implementing the plan’s nuclear-related policy recommendations.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Energy led in developing the plan to ensure that local and state decisionmakers have timely, accurate energy use and economic analysis, and that Missouri’s energy priorities are sufficiently incorporated into the national energy discourse.
The buildout of in-state nuclear power is central to the plan’s recommendations. The plan finds that nuclear generation can diversify the state’s portfolio of energy resources with reliable, clean energy generation. Nuclear power generation can also contribute to significant job and economic development gains in the state.
Based on these findings, the plan identifies several proposals to enable nuclear energy development in Missouri:
- Authorize the Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority to provide loans and other financial assistance for nuclear energy.
- Evaluate the feasibility of a Missouri Nuclear Power Authority to coordinate finance and development for nuclear generation and associated transmission assets, as well as to support federal funding.
- Modify the Renewable Energy Standard into an Advanced Energy Standard to enable nuclear development, promote energy independence and to support more reliable and clean in-state energy.
- Establish ratepayer protections that, if met, would allow the Missouri Public Service Commission to approve limited, conditional cost recovery for advanced nuclear projects before commercial operation.
- Establish a competitive grant program to expand Missouri’s nuclear-qualified workforce and academic infrastructure.
"We established the Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force to ensure the timely implementation of the nuclear-related recommendations in our new State Energy Plan," said Governor Mike Kehoe. " Nuclear energy is a cornerstone of Missouri's current generation portfolio, and the plan shows that expanding our nuclear capacity is essential to protecting the state's long-term economic interests."
“We can no longer ignore the need to invest in our state’s aging energy infrastructure,” said Jake Buxton, director of the Department of Natural Resources. “Missouri needs dispatchable, reliable energy. I share Governor Kehoe’s support for making nuclear energy a key part of diversifying our state’s electricity portfolio.”
Governor Kehoe designated the department to administer the Missouri Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force. The department will also continue to advise and engage with local, state and federal partners to proactively represent and advance Missouri’s energy goals, including the full suite of policies recommended in the State Energy Plan. The department looks forward to taking these steps together with Missouri’s task force members, as well as engaging with valued national partners including the U.S. Department of Energy, Westinghouse Electric and other critical federal and private-sector entities.
