Explore Missouri’s atlatl history and build your own atlatl at Sept. 12 events in Hannibal

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Immerse yourself in history and learn the ancient methods hunters used to harvest wild game at two free events this fall in northeast Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to learn about the atlatl -- a prehistoric spear-throwing tool that increased power, speed, and accuracy in hunting long before the bow and arrow.

These two events will be held at J. Thad Ray Memorial Wildlife Area in Hannibal on Saturday, Sept. 12 and are designed for participants ages 18 and older. The first event will cover the origins of the atlatl, how it works, and include a chance for participants to practice the skill for themselves. Register at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/oGM.  This portion will run from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

The second event will run from 12:30-3:00 p.m. and will allow participants to build their own atlatl. All materials will be provided. Register at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/oGA
